2005 marks the 12th anniversary of
the Buckhorn MapleFest and many new activities are planned to make
it a very special occasion. Buckhorn MapleFest takes place 4 km
south of Buckhorn Ontario located in the heart of Kawartha Lakes
cottage country. All of the activities take place at the Sugar
Bush.
Times and Location:
MapleFest is located 1 km east of county road 23 (highway 507)
at
the junction of Curve Lake Road. Driving times are 3 minutes south
of Buckhorn, 20 minutes north of Peterborough, 40minutes east of
Lindsay, 40 minutes from Apsley, 60 minutes from Campbellford and
1 ½ to 2 hours from Toronto. MapleFest is open on three
weekends 9:30 to 4:00 March 19,20, 25, 26,27 April 2,3. Cost is $4.00/person
for children under 2 years there is no Charge.
Activities:
A a delicious meal of pancakes and sausage covered in Maple Syrup
served by the Lakefield Lions, a horse drawn hay ride to the sugar
bush, an informative walking trail, demonstrations of traditional
Syrup making using pails for collecting the sap and a wood fired
evaporator to boil it, a pioneer display boiling sap over an open
fire.
Demonstrations of sugar making, hands on activities for the kids
from tapping holes to cutting logs with an old fashioned crosscut
saw, snowshoes, the animals at the ‘kid’s corral’,
a giant straw pile, pony rides live music at the market.

Opens the 2nd Saturday in May, 1 wk later in the fast water
area's.

Opens the first Saturday
in June.

Opens the last Saturday
in June.

Opens the last Saturday
in April
Top this off with a treat of toffee on snow. Our
snow canon and 4 wheeler wagon rides will return again this year.
An assortment of maple syrup, other maple products Homemade Jams
and Preserves are available for purchase.
Each day will feature a special event such as the free Newfoundland
dog cart rides on Sunday March 25th from 12 am to 3 pm or the Buckhorn
Snowmobile Club free rides March 19th.
New This Year:
Tours will be available in French. We also hope have planned a
new and exciting line up of local musicians to entertain you.

Other Activities at the Sugar Bush Weekdays
March 15th to April 9th Maple sugar bush tours are
a fun and educational experience for all. They are geared to the
age level of the group, from pre school to seniors.
Tours are available in English or French and
include - a hay ride, guided tour of the sugar bush and sugar camp,
pioneer demonstration with hands on activities, toffee on snow,
a romp in the straw pile and a teachers package packed with information
and activities to take back to the classroom. A great hit with
all is a visit to our ‘‘kids coral’’ to
visit the farm animals.
There is also a picnic area to eat your snack or lunch and our
country market will be open during tour times featuring fresh syrup
and other maple Products.
